I saw in the credits that it was adapted from a documentary, at which point everything made sense. I guess it works better as a documentary. The main reason is because as a movie the level of sadness feels too arbitrary and tear-jerker. You need a bit of calibration to understand that this is not a made-up story, but real people to whom real things happened.
I still have much respect for the movie, because I had no idea who those people are and why the movie was telling their story, but I ended very much involved! Much of it thanks to the performances of Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, and of course the nice music.
