(watched, at the theater 🍿)
I admit I did not immediately understand it was a literal mise en abime, and thought it was some meta-bullshit artistic crap, which put me out of the movie. Once I understood what was going on, it was better.
That being said, there are two things that will don't work very well. First is that many jokes didn't land for me or my theater. What's interesting is that maybe they would have actually landed in an actual play, but it's like cinema is more demanding.
Second is that many scenes don't constitute that much of big moments. For example the final scene where Digger hallucinates food is long and all, but it's still a bit boring.
Overall I can't deny it's a very interesting piece of cinema, with an interesting approach to its subject matter. It should deserve some recognition for being original and trying something new. But I can't deny either the execution is not there yet.
There was something uncanny with Tom Cruise's acting. I think he has a good shot at the Oscar.
