(watched, at the theater 🍿)
What I hate the most about this movie is that since 2009 I hold a grudge against Avatar haters for hating on the story when I found it to be a nice adventure story and those people were just trying to appear smarter than they are, but now this new episode truly has a lame story.
Firstly, it's too repetitive with what happens in Way of Water, like James Cameron is trapped in a loop in his head.
Secondly, character development is rushed and makes no sense in spite of being verbose. Jakesully is still an asshole with his children. Neytiri's unresolved conflict about her own family's race comes out of the blue in a conversation and is not deeply integrated into the story. The absolute craziness of being close to murdering an adopted child because he could lead to espionnage, like am I supposed to be rooting for this Jake motherfucker? While you're at it also kill your daughter since she's the one who made the magic happen. Anyway for some reason breathable air is game-changer.
Thirdly, war dynamics make no sense. So Toruk Maktu with all clans beat human hi-tech ships, but it's game over the minute Ash people arrive. Why don't the Ash people rule Pandora? What's the plan of humans against Ash people (remember they want to colonize)? Now we're going after whales so suddenly we forget about air superiority and bring only the boats that get wrecked by the whales. Wtf.
Anyway the action is epic and grandiose and I had a good time at the theater. Special effects are so good it's like they are 20 years ahead of Marvel shit. 3D is excellent too.
